Has there ever been such a fantastic place to holiday as the island of Rhodes in Greece? There are so many things to do in Rhodes that there is something here for everyone to enjoy. The island of Rhodes is the capital of the Dodecanese. It is also known as The island of the Knights. You will enjoy the endless golden beaches as well as the lush green valleys. People of all ages will enjoy the archaeological sites to enjoy as well a vibrant nightlife.
Things To Do In Rhodes Old Town
Going to Rhodes and not visiting the Old Town is like going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower. The Old Town is most famously the oldest medieval in Europe that is inhabited. It is notoriously easy to get lost in the Old Town, especially as most of the roads do not have names. Take this as a positive and embrace the opportunity of seeing all that this incredible town has to offer. As you wander around this mesmerizing town you will encounter more than 24 centuries of history all blended together. In fact, so much history is here that it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There are many fortress-like buildings, bastions, fountains, alleys and minarets to explore. Perhaps one of the best things to do in Rhodes Old Town is to explore the Palace. The Palace of the Grandmaster as it is officially known. The palace was built at the end of the 7th Century. Seven centuries after that the Knights of the Order of Saint John converted the building into the residence of the Grand Master. Today the palace serves as a museum.
Days can be spent wandering around these streets and you will always find something new. Be sure to check out the various inns that used to welcome the soldiers of the Order of the Knights. Take time to relax in the open air cafe’s and watch the locals go about their work. Another of the best things to do in Rhodes is to head to the Turkish District and explore the Mustafa Pasha Mosque and the Yeni Hammam.
The ‘New City’
Just outside of the Old Town is the ‘New City’. It is full of a grand selection of Venetian, neoclassic and modern buildings. The Post Office here is worth a visit as it shows off the architecture of the Italian period. It was designed by an Italian Architect called Florestano di Fausto. Other notable landmarks are Evangelismos Church, the National Theater, and the Town Hall. Another of the best things to do in Rhodes is to go for a walk around Mandraki. It is a small harbour that has statues of deer at the entrance as well as several windmills.
Party All Night In Faliraki
If you are of the younger generation and you like to party then you think this is one of the only things to do in Rhodes. Faliraki has been popular amongst 18-30’s for many years and it doesn’t seem like changing soon. At night the narrow streets come alive with loud music and neon lights. During the day the crowds can be found at the Faliraki Water Park. At the time of writing the park is the largest water park in Europe and fantastically popular. The beach here is highly organised and fully trained lifeguards are on patrol during daylight hours.
Enjoy Traditional Ialysos
Ialysos is the second largest town in Rhodes with a population of about 12,000. The atmosphere in this part of Rhodes is very laid back. Along the beach front, you will find many hotels with sea views. The village is set back from the beach by about half a mile and it is home to many traditional Greek Tavernas. Ialysos can get quite breezy from time to time. This makes it particularly popular with people who think that windsurfing is one of the best things to do in Rhodes. You will find the waves to be at their best in the afternoon.
Relax In The Peace And Quiet Of Kalathos
Perhaps you like to spend your time relaxing when you go on holiday. If so you will enjoy spending a few days in Kalathos. It is a small town that is situated on the east coast of Rhodes. Mass tourism has not reached this part of the island so you can truly relax away from the crowds. The beach does not have many facilities but you can still find a bar for a few afternoon drinks. Children may get a little bored in this part of the island but the older generation are sure to go home feeling completely rested.
Follow The Locals To Kalithea
Follow the locals and find the treasure! That has always been my mantra when visiting new places and it is no different in Rhodes. Going to Kalithea is one of the best things to do in Rhodes and that is backed up by all the Greeks you will see there. The fantastic Italian baths have always been a popular attraction as have the wonderful mezedes and their clear green water. The coastline has lots of little coves to explore and although the beach is mixed sand and shingle, you will find plenty of space to sunbathe.
This guide barely scratches the surface of things to do in Rhodes and you could come here many times before you see it all. The island continues to be popular with people from both Greece and abroad. The main times to come are between June and late September. In other months the island can be very quiet.
