The best cheeseburger is a conversation that has been had for decades. What is perfect for one person is not going to be perfect for the next. However, this amazing smash burger ticks so many of the criteria that for us it is the best burger we have ever made.
The great news is that it is easy to make and most people have many of the ingredients in their store cupboard already. There will be no trips to the mall to buy expensive ingredients that you will never use again.
When you think about hamburgers your mind starts to think of a sizzling hot grill, fried onions, melted cheese and a well made bun.
This recipe uses the smash burger technique. It has been proven to lock in all the delicious flavors of the burger as well as give that awesome crust to the burger that we all love.
8 Burger Rolls (we prefer brioche)
1lb Freshly ground Beef Chuck – try to get a fat content of about 20%
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
1 Iceberg Lettuce
8 Slices of Cheese. American burger cheese is recommended.
For the sauce
8 Tablespoons Mayo
6 Tablespoons Ketchup
2 Tablespoons Sweet Relish
1 1/2 Teaspoons White Vinegar
1 1/2 Teaspoons Sugar
Best Cheeseburger Method
Firstly you should create the burger sauce by mixing all the sauce ingredients together.
Divide the beef chuck into 8 even sized balls and set aside.
Cut buns into two and set aside.
Heat grill over a high heat. It should take about two minutes to bring it up to temperature.
Put the balls of beef onto the grill. Smash them down using a flat metal spatula. If you have a rolling pin you can use this to apply pressure to make this easier.
You are looking to make the patties slightly larger than the burger buns.
Season the burgers generously with salt and pepper
After about forty five seconds the meat should start to turn pale pink. At this point flip the burgers over.
Place a knob of butter on the top of the burgers and wait a few seconds for it to start to melt.
Put a piece of cheese onto the top of four of the patties.
Put the four patties without cheese on top of the four with cheese.
Whilst the cheese is melting on the burgers you should add the buttered buns to the grill. Do this Butter side down.
The buns should be nicely toasted after a minute or less.
Take the bottom buns and add a layer of burger sauce.
Place three slices of tomato on top.
Add six thin slices of pickle.
Put a sprinkling of iceberg lettuce.
Place the burger patties, followed by raw onion to taste.
Add more burger sauce and place the top of the bun on.
You should now have one of the best cheeseburgers that you can make at home.
